In this interview, Dick Short (b.1940) speaks about his long connection with the Nunraw community. His family moved to Scotland when he was a child when his father, a stonemason, was employed to work at Nunraw. Dick went to Knox Academy for 2 years, before becoming an apprentice joiner at Nunraw where he worked under Brother Anthony, a fine joiner. Dick describes some of the work he did at Nunraw, around the estate and in the village of Garvald. He recalled the summer camps, when groups would come from Glasgow and Newcastle to help with the build. Dick also shares his knowledge of Garvald and how the village and surroundings have changed over time and he talks about his own home, on Nunraw estate, which he and his wife renovated from a shell. A further 2 houses here have been renovated by his son. Dick remembers cycling to North Berwick and getting the school bus. As a youngster, he was very keen on rugby and had been offered opportunities to move to Edinburgh clubs, but he preferred to remain at Haddington where he was team captain 3 times and played until he was in his late 40s. Cycling became a big passion later in his life, although the busy roads and a back injury have curtailed this more recently. Also present in the interview is Dick’s wife, Vicky, whom he met at the dancing in the 1960s. Vicky recalls that she sometimes provided teaching cover at the Garvald school in the time shortly before it closed, in 1970.
