This interview forms part of the Kirkcudbright Artists Remembered project. This project was active during the refurbishment of the Kirkcudbright Town hall into the Kirkcudbright Galleries centre and was undertaken as a partnership between the Kirkcudbright Harbour Cottage Trust and the EERC. In this interview Andrew Campbell shares some memories of the Kirkcudbright artists from his family memories. Andrew’s family were joiners and contractors and he said that E A Hornel had a bit of a reputation among joiners as he raked the countryside for materials for Broughton House. From his own working days, Andrew recalled going to the Greengate when Dorothy Rey and Anna Hotchkis still lived there. He remembered Dorothy Rey often had an owl, one he remembers was called Jeeves, who lived in the house with her. He could also remember the artists coming for the summer schools and the easels out in the street while they worked. While recognising the importance of the artists to Kirkcudbright, Andrew said that Kirkcudbright was also a very special place with a friendly and vibrant community which had achieved a lot. He had great hopes for the success of the new gallery but felt the community also had to be proactive. For him this included protesting against the planned windfarm at Knockendurrick. Towards the end of the interview, Andrew also shares his memories of the artist, Donald Rudd.
