This interview forms part of the Kirkcudbright Artists Remembered project. This project was active during the refurbishment of the Kirkcudbright Town hall into the Kirkcudbright Galleries centre and was undertaken as a partnership between the Kirkcudbright Harbour Cottage Trust and the EERC. The interviewee, Lesley Priestly (aged 73), came to Kirkcudbright from Glasgow in 1953. Her father was a teacher and her mother ran a dress shop on Castle Street. Lesley recalled a number of artists from her childhood and said that it was only with hindsight that their presence seemed out of the ordinary. Lena Alexander was remembered as a friendly and fun artist who painted many of the local children, including Lesley herself. Lena also opened her own dress shop, Alexis, (which Lesley's mother and aunt later bought) and a cafe. Lesley also sat for Tom Halliday and attended art classes with Miles Johnston. She also remembered other artists who made the town their home, such as Tim Jeffs and Cecile Walton and recalled a time when the Glasgow School of Art required their students to spend a week in Kirkcudbright.
