Interview with Donald Haining who has investigated the history behind, and is involved in the upkeep and care of, Atkinson Place, a development of 18 dwellings in Kirkcudbright which was funded by anonymous donations made over a number of years, beginning in 1869 by Mr Edward Atkinson (b.1813). Donald has explored the kirk session papers and provides many details of how and when payments were made and the decision process which led to the construction of these dwellings on land which was bought from the Earl of Selkirk for £600. Intended to provide housing for the poor, these dwellings were often rented to retiring farm workers who had to leave tied accommodation when they retired Rents were determined by means testing and the dwelling were monitored to ensure good standards of accommodation were maintained. This continues to this day. Donald talks about change over time, such as noting the bequest of £35,000 made by local shopkeeper, Louise Palmer which enabled the houses to be fitted with indoor toilets in the 1950s. Donald talks about his current role within the kirk session in ensuring the development is run along the principals established by Edward Atkinson and notes that the terms of the bequest mean that this unique development cannot be sold off. The initial instructions were to follow the model of the Prince Albert model cottages and the interview ends with a consideration of whether similar initiatives are still in existence.
