Biographical interview with Dorothy Bell (b.1945, Glasgow). Dorothy was brought up in Hightae where her grandmother ran a busy shop. She recalled going up to the war memorial to collect the daily papers, which she then helped deliver before she went to school at Lockerbie Academy. Determined to become a nurse, Dorothy worked on Saturdays with Mrs Noble, the chemist at Laidlaw's and there she helped count out tablets etc. She remembered Mrs Noble making up cough mixtures and also using a large marble slap to mix ointments. Dorothy then went on to work at Moat Brae and she describes the day-to-day routine there, including the shift patterns, meals, laundry etc. She also talks about the different operations carried out routinely at Moat Brae. Dorothy eventually went on to complete her training as a psychiatric nurse at Crichton hospital and says that her time at Moat Brae provided her with very good basic training. Towards the end of the interview, Dorothy talks about the uniforms worn at Moat Brae and recalls that the monthly wage of around £7.00 meant you were quite poor by the end of the month.
