Biographical interview with Peter Stewart (b.1932) who was born and brought up in Dumfries. His family lived at 16 Castle Street, in a 4-storey terraced house, which Peter recalls, had only 1 bathroom, which was right at the top of the house. Peter went to Dumfries Academy before going to George Watson's in Edinburgh to complete his education. He embarked on training for a career in farming and became General Manager of a firm that carried out artificial insemination in South Devon and Cornwall. Peter's father was a physician, surgeon and anaesthetist who worked in a number of hospitals across Dumfries, including Moat Brae. Peter relates his own memories of Moat Brae, including the layout of the house and grounds. He believed that Moat Brae was owned by the matron, Miss Cochrane, and recalled that he and his brother lived with her for a year, in West Linton, after she had retired and they were removed from the boarding house where they had been staying (due to the poor standards). Peter also talks about the development of anaesthetics and of the gardens at Moat Brae, where he remembers cycling along formal paths and many fruit trees, a coal-fired greenhouse and a huge monkey puzzle tree.
